Secret places of the Duomo
The guided tour begins in the oldest building of the monumental complex of Piazza “San Giovanni”, the symbol of the city. Dedicated to the patron saint of Florence, San Giovanni or St.John, the Baptistery is an extraordinary example of Romanesque architecture; embellished with a thousand square mosaics and the famous golden door named the Door of Paradise by non other than Michelangelo. Continue to enter the Cathedral, an example of Florentine Gothic style, plain and simple and grand in size. In the cathedral we will be transported to the liturgical season dall’Orologio by Paolo Uccello. We will be stunned by the equestrian monumental frescos of two leaders who fought for the city of Florence, and we will loose ourselves in Federico Zuccari and Giorgio Vasari’s huge fresco of the Last Judgement. that adorn the internal vault the Dome.
The tour also includes admission to the beautifully remodeled Opera del’Duomo museum, where the monumental sculptures that marked the transition from Gothic to Renaissance are on display.
